Inspired and the Sleep keeps rolling out the ace tunes, on what seems like a monthly basis, and Take Pills keeps that streak going. This song hits ultimate head bobbing mode when the flute drops, so wait for it.
And then go download it for your own personal consumption. It is free after all. Grab it on Soundcloud or Bandcamp. And since Tumblr Tuesday was almost today (if it hadn’t been yesterday), and since Inspired and the Sleep just gave their site a makeover, you should head over there and give them a good followin’.
And take your pills (whether that be E, Vitamin C, or just your standard Chill Pill).
It’s Tumblr Tuesday today. Turns out it is also an ebb and flow kind of day. Looks like this reblog deals with both (i.e. give flamgirlant a follow, if you don’t already, and then snag this sweet mix tape she put together).
It’s a transition time of year. 60 degrees one day, 90 the next. Passing over recipes that require the oven to be on and going straight for fresh fruits and veggies. Trading in my red wine for vodka lemonade. It’s the time of year I find myself going from 0 to 60 and back again over the course of a few days only to repeat it again and again. Too much to do, brief respite to catch my breath, too much to do. That’s how things roll before I find myself lockstep with summer.
Some days ebb, some days flow. This mixtape works much the same way.
There are some great tunes here, folks. You’re bound to fall for one or two. When you do fall, please do the right thing - buy a record, see a show. Send the band some love so they can keep doing what they do.
As always, visit my mixtape hub to listen to more mixed goodness!
It had been a while since something like this had happened. Life has been quite hectic and loud and fast. Too much so to sit down and write and stand up again and sit down again and write some more and plug in the guitars and set the microphones up and then play… But I have a new home now. The recording studio finally all set up, all the buttons & cables in the right position. And a song fell upon me, maybe like a token of gratitude. It was Saturday. I woke up with a title in my slightly aching head: Ruins of you. No idea where it came from (maybe a recurrent dream I have been having lately about an abandoned village in the south of Spain I once wandered through), but I took my guitar and in no time there was a melody to sing it with. The low voice due to the spring cold I have also inspired a bit. The story just had to come out I guess. So it was written and recorded in less than 6 hours. Afterwards I felt like smoking a cigarette but I am being a good boy trying to quit so I just sat back and had a drink and felt relieved somehow that there was enough silence in my life again to make some noise…
This sweet mix tape from bloggers Cactus-Mouth and Unholy Rhythms was exactly what my day needed to get properly going. It is a mix of brilliant 50’s and 60’s era covers and it’s free, so I’m not sure what else you could ask for… besides the link to get it for yourself.
Also, it is Tumblr Tuesday. So if you aren’t already, you should definitely start following the two responsible for this gem of a compilation.
It’s true, HI54LOFI RECORDS did get a makeover and in a new section called Ear Candy, there is a tasty track by Lizard Kisses (that you can listen to AND download). Besides checking that out, being Tumblr Tuesday and all, it would also be wise for you to start following the Lizard Kisses tumblr.
First of all, could you please do me a solid and recommend me this week? I would surely appreciate it!
Second, I am going to post a couple of my Christmas Cards from the past on my tumblr. I get a lot of emails from people asking if they can use my cards for themselves. I thought it would be fun to strip off the personal messages and allow anyone to use them this year. So please feel free! This is probably my favorite, from 2008.
One of my favourite things about Tumblr is the reblog. There are so many great blogs on here and it is nice to not only find about about cool things, but to be able to easily share what you like. And what better day to share what you like then on a day when you can get to turn that reblog into a Tumblr Tuesday recommendation.
This one is a bit of a one bird with two stones scenario. The always consistent yvynyl shared a great album by an artist who also has a tumblr. You should check them both out, if you don’t already.
One of my all time favorite artists is Nick Drake, so when I read a review of a record that makes the comparison (as The Wounded Jukebox did), my critical side raises it’s skeptical eyebrow. Not many people can match the tenor, the vulnerability, the mystique of Drake’s songwriting. It is truly otherworldly.
So I hit play on this 23 year old Brooklynite’s new record New Vanguard Blues with a healthy dose of incredulity. It was erased entirely in just shy of 10 seconds. This is the lead track off that self-released record, but is only one of several heartbreakingly perfect tunes. The talent seeping out of this record makes me equal parts jealous and joyful that such beauty exists in this lonesome world.
For starters, we have started to ask friendlies to make us a mix tape, which we will then post to either our Mixcloud page or to our 8tracks page. The tasty 24 minutes of tastiness that you are currently listening to comes way of our man in Mexican, Collateral Soundtrack. I realize now that I am officially a sucker for anything with KMD on it.
Since it is Tumblr Tuesday, and since we have been slacking in our plan to participate in TT every week, we’ll keep this post going by letting you know that Edgar is also rocking a great tumblr of his own, the vowel-less ClltrlSndtrck (where even more sweet tunes are stored, including another great mix tape).
Sweet to see local Doug Hoyer getting some love on the always good Smoke Don’t Smoke. And, to top things off, it is Tumblr Tuesday. So, if you aren’t already, then you need to start getting a daily fix of Smoke Don’t Smoke today.
If you have Tumblr now, then you probably already are following him. So this might be aimed more at the people who aren’t on Tumblr. Come on over.
Canadian Doug Hoyer has a new 7” out on Old Ugly Recording Co. Above is the B-side Lakes of Mars, that if it doesn’t get a pep in your step, I don’t think anything will. Doug is a pretty awesome dude, who I think we can expect to see a lot out of in the future. Whether he’s writing slow introspective songs or upbeat dancy pop, you can count on one thing. And that is that Doug will write honest music. You can’t get that guarantee just anywhere.
Go scope the new 7” tunes here, and even pick up a copy if you feel so inclined. And I think you do ;)
