You should all take a moment out of your day today (or make note to do so later this week) and go listen to Tiny Ruins gorgeous new EP of old songs ‘Haunts’. If you have ever heard Hollie sing before, then you probably do not need any further convincing on why you should drop what you’re listening to right now and switch. There is a mesmerizing beauty to her voice and this EP is a simply magic. Just like everything else she’s put to tape… although, there might be just a pinch more magic captured on this EP.
So please go to Bandcamp and listen (or I guess you could just stay here and listen). And then buy a copy and take these songs for a walk through your nearest park.
A Singer Of Songs just started a Youtube account. There are just a few videos up now (including this great animation that was done by Ariel Victor for ‘Road To Nowhere’). There are also a couple of videos in the works for tracks off of the soon to be officially released ‘There Is A Home For You’ album.
Which you’ve all pre-ordered by now, right? It’s on vinyl and the test pressings sound magic (it’s also on CD and digital, which are equally magic sounding).
The amazing Tiny Ruins just announced an upcoming EP release (set for April 19th on Spunk Records), and it sounds like it will be quite amazing. To be fair, anything Hollie sings sounds amazing, so there is no way that anything she puts out won’t be just that. But her description of the project (and this first taste) sounds like bliss:
“Haunts is 6 songs long, and I emphasize the fact that this baby is a blast from the past: we’re talking late teens/early 20s material. So it’s a sort of a throwback to a time before the first album Some Were Meant for Sea. It’s us playing these older songs live in a beautiful wooden ceiling’d room in Waipu.”
Haunts will be available on iTunes, but more importantly, on vinyl as well (in Europe it will be out exclusively via Rough Trade). Really looking forward to getting my hands on it. But for now, I’ll just put this cover on repeat (and I should also mention, that you can hear/get an older more stripped down versionof Hollie singing this track on an old covers album we put out many moons ago).
Tiny Ruins amazing album ‘Some Were Meant For Sea’ is getting put out on vinyl (by Own Records). If you have a record player, you should definitely get it. If you don’t have a record player, this album is a good reason to get one.
Especially since it almost didn’t happen. We had a train booked to go down to London last night and we missed it… by seconds. Our taxi got caught up in traffic and by the time I picked up our tickets, the man in the hat had already blown his whistle. And apparently there is no turning back once a whistle is blown. Even if you are standing right there beside the train before it starts to move.
Catching a bus down today. Knock on wood that we don’t miss it.
The amazing Tiny Ruins has come all the way from New Zealand to do a little European tour. It starts this Thursday in Glascow and if you happen to be in any of the cities she’ll be popping by, you’d be wise to go check her out. Even if you don’t live in one of those cities, you’d be wise to book a trip to the nearest one. I’ve yet to see her live, but I’ll go out on a limb and bet it will be quite the enchanting experience.
I’ll be hopping a train down to London to see her on Feb 4th. Can’t wait.
In the midst of going through all of our shit and deciding what to keep, what to give away and what to throw out, a package arrived in the mail. A package that immediately landed in the ‘what to keep’ pile.
This isn’t the first time I’ve posted about Hollie’s beautiful music, nor is it the first time I’ve posted about Some Were Meant For Sea. But this is the first time I’ve held the physical cd in my hands while listening to it on a proper pair of headphones, and the album is now available on iTunes worldwide (it was only available Australia and New Zealand the last time I posted about it). Plus, Tiny Ruins is that rare combination of a beautifully haunting voice + absolutely brilliant song writer. She is a gem and if you haven’t yet, you need to get into her (and if you have to pack up your life into cardboard boxes, I couldn’t recommend using this album to soundtrack the task enough)
Also, my name is in the liner notes of this album. And that is pretty cool and blog post worthy as well.
Get Some Were Meant For Sea through iTunes, or from Spunk.
The always enchanting Hollie (aka Tiny Ruins) plays a song on a balcony in New Zealand. The song originally appeared on the split EP she did with A Singer of Songs (an EP that HI54LOFI helped put out) and that same song will also appear on Tiny Ruins upcoming release on Spunk Records, ‘Some Were Meant For Sea’. I haven’t heard the album yet, but I would bet my mother that it will be an album that will have the ability to make time stand still. Because that’s what Hollies music always does. I’ve yet to not get lost in her enchanting voice and beautiful lyrics.
Hollie Fullbrook aka Tiny Ruins, with the assist from Leiven Scheerlinck, flawlessly conveys sentimental resentment and the desire to recall the most imperfect moments. She weaves a complicated, but never convoluted, story of selfish disregard, and the need to be remembered by the ones who seldom cared.
