Fake Plastic Trees
Radiohead • The Bends
Everyday, since the day we first moved to England, our neighbour has played ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ at a volume loud enough to clearly hear it in our house. Often, many times a day on repeat. Sometimes he listens to the rest of The Bends, sometimes he’ll play reggae versions of Radiohead songs, but mostly he just plays ‘Fake Plastic Trees’. Sometimes he’ll just play it once and then not play anything else all day. And sometimes he’ll even try to sing to it.
I wonder if he just really, really likes that song, or if he has no other music. Perhaps he is just really depressed, and puts that song on and does some crying. Or maybe he has some weird ritual that he soundtracks with that song. I have a theory that he is trying to find something that matches up to the song, as a sort of modern day ‘play Pink Floyd at the same time as The Wizard Of Oz’ type thing. That theory is partly based off the strong smell of marijuana that permeates from their house into ours.
Whatever he is doing, one thing is for sure: he is killing that song for me.
