Randomly stumbled upon a nice little archive of Chuck Klosterman articles / essays the other day. And it was a nice reminder of why I always tell people that he is my favourite writer. For a sample of his brilliance, here is a snippet from his article on the rise of ape movies:
I don’t know how I feel about monkeys. I almost never eat bananas or listen to Supergrass. My mind is caged. My back is silver. Even in an empty room, my ears are filled with the sound of howling. Yet how can I overcome this confusion? How am I supposed to rationally understand the role of monkeys in modern society when all our high-profile monkey films are so contradictory? Sometimes I think movies are not the best way to understand primatology.
Also, Chuck just recently put out his second novel, called The Visible Man, and it sounds like another winner. I haven’t read it yet, as in a rare act of selflessness, I bought it not for myself, but for my brother as a Christmas gift (who, in return, gave us a home made DVD of our niece). I bought the book online (cause it’s cheaper), and to save on the shipping, I had it mailed directly to his house… so I couldn’t even read it before I gave it to him. Maybe my selflessness was slightly influenced by my cheapness.
And Vern… if you are reading this, we loved the DVD. Honestly.
