Grateful For Christmas - Hayes Carll

Grateful For Christmas

Hayes Carll • KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

This song comes off of Hayes most recent release. Despite the topic of this song, it wasn’t off a Christmas album. Just a Christmas song on a regular album (an album that was one of my favourites of the year).

Christmas songs always make you a little sentimental, although that is usually just because you’ve heard the song a lot so you directly associate to previous times you’ve heard it. This song is new and original, but it makes me think of my family back home and the Christmas I’ll be missing out on. It’s probably because my family is a little country (with real farmers and cowboys), but it is also the little details in the song. Like ‘Grandpa say the blessings’ (which was always someone saying a legitimate grace and then Grandpa saying “Good bread, good meat, good God, lets eat”, without fail, everytime) and ‘uncle Frank can’t make it’ (I had an uncle Frank, although, technically he wasn’t an uncle, but the sentiment rings true). I guess this year it’s uncle sketchy that can’t make it.

Anyways, Merry Christmas or whatever you celebrate or don’t celebrate. Be kind to each other.

P.S. - this song is also on this Xmas mix tape I put together
